It is written in the bible: “And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat.”
Yesterday the voters of California missed the opportunity to help move us all onto a more enlightened path. Proposition 19 would have made it legal for citizens of the great state of California to produce, posses, and consume cannabis for recreational use. Surely this legislation had its shortcomings and those directly representing it did not succeed in completely informing the voters of how policy would would effect them. But….
Having cannabis legal for recreational purposes would have opened the door for cannabis to provide not only a safer recreational alternative to alcohol but clear the way for its use as a food, fuel and fiber. It is the potential that cannabis provides as a food, fuel and fiber that makes policy change truly worth wile. People should get behind a super-crop that would put food on the table, fuel in the tank, provide jobs, and pump even more money in the economy. Cannabis is non harmful to humans/animals and the environment. It grows with little fertilizer and insecticide. It grows extremely fast, making it possible to harvest twice a year in many regions of the country.
The country as a whole seems bent on language and conversation based around only one half of the cannabis plant. Marijuana dominates the conversation, the vocabulary, and the mindset. How can we truly influence voters who have believed for so long (wrongly) that marijuana was a dangerous drug, when in reality marijuana is just one part of the completely safe and much more important, cannabis plant. Cannabis was not made illegal because it was a harmful product but because it is a superior natural product and a threat to industry and profits. Cannabis threatens fuel producers, food producers, paper producers, and medicine producers. Cannabis would benefit us all as a whole, but with less potential to make huge profits.
So I must ask…
Which is the more enlightened path, the one that benefits all of society by providing food, fuel, fiber, medicine and safe recreation to the all people or continuing to pander to the fearmongers that seek to protect profits for the few?
